CharlestonCharleston Educational Tours

The city of Charleston is picturesque…stunning architecture, brilliant colors, and cobblestone streets tell the history of this southern South Carolina town. Charleston also houses popular attractions that tell stories from a war time perspective. Places like Patriot’s Point Naval and Maritime Museum, The Hunley, and Fort Moultrie are just a few.

First recommended stop would be Patriots Point, which is the home of the famous aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, a heavily decorated warship that played a pivotal role in World War 2. Patriots Point is one of the most visited attractions in the Carolinas. Next, those interested in history must visit the Hunley. The Hunley was also a vessel on the sea but of a war well before WW2. The Hunley was a submarine that played a small part in the American Civil War but a significant role in naval warfare.

Lastly…. in April 1863, Union soldiers with their shore batteries began a 20 month bombardment of Sumter and Fort Moultrie, yet Charleston’s defenses held. When the confederate army evacuated the city in 1865 Fort Sumter was little more that a pile of rubble but Fort Moultrie lay hidden under the levies of sand that protected its walls. Today Fort Moultrie has been completely restored and open to visitors.
